To ease my guilt a bit, I am tapping a sure-fire procrastinator\u2019s trick: Do some other thing that sort of needs to be done while you\u2019re avoiding that thing that really needs to be done. Fifty years of writing angst have proved a pretty good way to keep my floors scrubbed and laundry folded. Some days, I even get to windows.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>In this case, the thing I\u2019m doing instead of cleaning the garage is to tackle a related&nbsp;mess, which are the neglected stories and links in my SAVE file. Some are as dated as the yellowed clips stuffed into boxes in&nbsp;my garage. Some are poignant reminders of time and place, like those jeans I\u2019ll never get back into. But some&nbsp;yield little treasures \u2014 stories&nbsp;I tucked away to teach from or essays that offered a bit of&nbsp;inspiration when I needed it.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>Taking a cue from another part of my domestic life, which is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realsimple.com\/home-organizing\/green-living\/buy-nothing-groups#:~:text=Understanding%20that%20not%20everyone%20can,with%20new%20features%20each%20month.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BuyNothing<\/a>&nbsp;movement, I\u2019m passing a few of those things along here, hoping they will find a new use.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-heading   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remembering the mission<\/h2>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>This isn\u2019t a big-box haul to Goodwill, but a dribble of select items. I\u2019ll start with snippets of wisdom from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeanpressprize.com\/people\/preparatory-committee\/cristian-lupsa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cristian Lupsa<\/a>, founder and editor of DoR Magazine and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/search\/power+of+storytelling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Power of Storytelling Conference<\/a>&nbsp;in Romania. The magazine folded after 13 years because of the same challenges facing news organizations around the world. The conference was suspended during COVID, but a reunion edition is planned for spring 2025. Lupsa stays deeply involved in journalism, with a growing passion for how we can align our mission even more closely with public service and solutions in today\u2019s fractured world. For now, two quick moments:<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>Lupsa has found himself discouraged by the state of journalism and&nbsp;civic incivility. On May 19, Lupsa wrote about \u201cdiminishers\u201d vs \u201cilluminators,\u201d and the danger of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/draftfour.substack.com\/p\/draft-four-seeing-beyond-the-anger?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=1313945&amp;post_id=144751578&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=true&amp;r=1feuj&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anger as a journalistic motivation<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p><em>The majority (of people)&nbsp;don\u2019t trust journalists, not because they don\u2019t trust their information \u2013 but because they don\u2019t even trust their intentions.<\/em><\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>Less than a month later, on June 9,<em>&nbsp;<\/em>he tapped a bit of an antidote. He had attended the awards ceremony for the 2024 European Press Prize, which he helped judge for two years. He included links to some of the winners and a few other favorite stories. He acknowledge that the subject of many of the winning entries provide ample reason to be angry at the state of the world, and again advocated for a journalism of caring. He also echoed something I\u2019ve always felt after plowing through piles and piles of contest entries, which remind me that, as disheartening as the story subjects are,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/draftfour.substack.com\/p\/draft-four-a-journalists-summer-list?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=1313945&amp;post_id=145446558&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=true&amp;r=1feuj&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the service to mission hasn\u2019t faltered<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-quote mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>Every time we feel down about the state of journalism, reading the best of it out there is a cure.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-heading   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PS: On saving your clips<\/h2>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>It\u2019s dangerous to assume your digital clips will survive forever,&nbsp; no matter how or where they\u2019re stored. Nieman Lab recently wrote about the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2024\/07\/to-preserve-their-work-and-drafts-of-history-journalists-take-archiving-into-their-own-hands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">history that is lost<\/a>&nbsp;when journalistic archives are lost. Many journalists, aware of that risk, are scrambling on their own to save their work. I did&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rjionline.org\/reporting\/saving-journalism-and-story-clips-from-the-trash-heap-of-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my own such scramble<\/a>&nbsp;eight years ago, when I tried to track my old clips through 20 years and five newsrooms.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
