A\u00a0boy with Asperger\u2019s syndrome asks his mother if she\u2019s happy he was born. The stories are tender and real, and each one is unadorned by anything but a brief host introduction. There are none of the usual tools of audio storytelling: no narrator, no musical scoring, no\u00a0\u201cnatural sound.\u201d<\/p><br \/><br \/><br \/><figure id=\"attachment_117222\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117222\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/03\/images-5.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-117222 \" alt=\"David Isay\" src=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/app\/uploads\/2024\/03\/images-5-150x150.jpeg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-117222\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Isay<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/><p dir=\"ltr\">These <a href=\"http:\/\/storycorps.org\/\">StoryCorps<\/a> segments are only 2.5 minutes each, but they\u2019re culled from 40-minute sessions recorded in the non-profit\u2019s touring \u201cbooths\u201d with two microphones and a facilitator who can help make the conversations meaningful.<\/p><br \/><p dir=\"ltr\">Now 11 years old, StoryCorps has facilitated 50,000 such recordings. For their session at the Third Coast conference, StoryCorps founder <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StoryCorps\">David Isay<\/a> and producer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mikro_fone\">Michael Garofalo<\/a> focused on how they get a select few of these recordings into shape for broadcast.<\/p><br \/><p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThere\u2019s this illusion that people step into a StoryCorps booth and tell a perfect three-minute story,\u201d Garofalo said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of editing that goes on.\u201d<\/p><br \/>No kidding. StoryCorps sessions are transcribed, but Garofalo doesn\u2019t work from the logs. Once his team has selected a recording to break down, they go through it in ProTools, an audio production system, flagging sections by theme, and also flagging transitional words that might come in handy when rearranging bits of conversations. He showed us his list of 23 \u201cbuts\u201d for one session.<br \/><br \/>In the end, the 2.5 minute broadcast version he showed us had 274 separate edits. That\u2019s an average of almost two per second.<br \/><br \/>But even more goes into the back end of these productions, and that involves the participants themselves. They have to give StoryCorps permission to broadcast, of course, but they also cooperate with fact-checking as producers try to corroborate any incidents or facts that come up in the conversation. And finally, StoryCorps must get their permission for the final edited version before it goes to NPR. No one has ever refused, Garofalo says. In fact, \u201cthere\u2019s a lot of crying\u201d when people hear the distillation, he said.<br \/><br \/>Isay drew the name of his presentation from a Zen proverb he keeps tacked above his desk: \u201cA good craftsman leaves no trace.\u201d That disappearance is very much what StoryCorps is all about: elevating, above all else, those who speak.
