As the facts became clearer, lawsuits followed. Now, the anger has deepened as Camp Mystic&#8217;s owners announced plans to reopen for campers this summer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>You&#8217;ll also want to read <a href=\"https:\/\/link.nymag.com\/view\/619bfe2e82bb16369177914aqpfa6.27s\/67f130d6\">Emily Gould&#8217;s interview with Howley<\/a> for details on how she reported and structured the longform piece, and her decision to lead with the perspective of the families:<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-quote mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>For a long time, I wasn\u2019t sure if I would tell the story of that night because I wanted us to be with the parents. They\u2019re lost and they don\u2019t have access to where their children are and they\u2019re literally miles from the camp \u2014 like, physically miles from where they last knew that their children were safe, and they\u2019re not getting information, and there are these terrible press conferences where they\u2019re just being stonewalled. I wanted us to be with them and kind of desperate to know and unable to get that information. So, then, when do you reveal what happened? Once the parents have fully pieced together the horror of what happened that night \u2014 and particularly how close those girls were to safety \u2014 that is the time to tell it. That\u2019s why I withheld that information until the end.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>Howley adds: \u201cSo many of the stories about Camp Mystic told on morning television or even the local news have a positive spin, like, \u2018Oh, here\u2019s how they found hope in their sorrow.\u2019 And ultimately I don\u2019t think this is a story about resilience or hope. He was 80.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>Kidder&#8217;s wide-ranging work has inspired and guided many journalists \u2014&nbsp;many of whom wrote about what they learned from Kidder in Nieman Storyboard. His book, <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/good-prose-the-art-of-nonfiction-richard-todd\/8d70c09761b31a61?ean=9780812982152&amp;next=t&amp;next=t\">\u201cGood Prose: The Art of Nonfiction,\u201d<\/a> written with his longtime editor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/12\/23\/magazine\/richard-todd-death.html\">Richard Todd<\/a>, is featured in the <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/2025\/04\/17\/nieman-storyboard-guide-to-books-on-storytelling\/\">Nieman Storyboard Guide to Books on Storytelling<\/a>.
