It ran on March 13, 2o20, under a bold headline,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/health\/2020\/03\/12\/coronavirus-the-day-everything-in-florida-changed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;The day everything in Florida changed&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;and was the first time a reporter at the Tampa Bay Times had tried to rise above the daily bulletins of closures and postponements and new world orders that the coronavirus was causing and give readers a broader picture of what we all were feeling.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>Zachary T. Sampson continues: \u201cIt disappeared with a buzz in our pocket, and then another, and then another because in the 24 hours when coronavirus erased America\u2019s plans, everything was BREAKING.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>He touches on travel, sports, school closings and social distancing. He quotes the governor, updates numbers of people who are infected, and those who died. He mentions Google searches, international response, grocery stores and Disney World.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>Then he runs through a list of cancelled concerts \u2014 and writes a sentence with a perfect pun: \u201cKenny Chesney and Cher pushed back concerts in Tampa. So did the band America, because on Thursday, of course, America was postponed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-quote mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>America was postponed!<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>When I asked Sampson about the story, he said that he didn\u2019t actually write that sentence. The Times\u2019 music critic, Jay Cridlin, had suggested it as a headline about concert cancellations. But the headline never ran in print. Sampson reached out through the newsroom Slack channel, where we share headline ideas, and asked if he could use it in his piece. \u201cIf I had a takeaway,\u201d he told me later, \u201cit\u2019s the example of how newsroom brainstorms make us so much better. \u2026 We\u2019re all better for the collaboration. In this case, a half dozen or so people were part of that headline \u2014 first and foremost Jay \u2014 and they all had an equal hand in that little line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>Those last three words took me back to 1970s, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.venturahighway.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rock band America.&nbsp;<\/a>&nbsp;I found myself humming:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/America-a-horse-with-no-name-lyrics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cA horse with no name.\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;(Give it a listen. It&#8217;s a ballad about man&#8217;s destruction of the environment, but has echoes about much more.)<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>In their partnered piece, Sampson and Cridlin manage to name threats to all of the life rituals we have lost for now. The story made us feel a little more connected, a little less sorry for ourselves.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-classic mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-paragraph mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            \n<p>Best of all, in what was a scary, depressing litany about loss in these uncertain times, that sentence made me smile.<\/p>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2014Zachary T.
