She had just been appointed editor of <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nieman Storyboard<\/a>, and we weren\u2019t quite ready to make the news public. (\u201cHmm, where did that saying get its start?\u201d she wondered about the expression \u2018Keep it under your hat.\u2019 \u201cDid people hide things under their hats?\u201d)<br \/><br \/>I found that in a batch of email exchanges I read through after I learned of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/obituaries\/story\/2022-01-10\/kari-howard-times-editor-who-championed-narrative-writing-dead-at-59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kari Howard\u2019s death<\/a> on Jan. 10. These simple lines struck me as so representative of her character as a person and as an editor \u2014 tremendous personal warmth, a whimsical curiosity and a fine eye for the nuances of phrase and meaning.<br \/><br \/>Kari was a longtime editor at the Los Angeles Times, including of Column One, the paper\u2019s signature narrative journalism feature, and most recently was the storytelling editor at Reuters in London. I knew her as the editor of Storyboard, where she was characteristically generous with her warmth and whimsy and where lovers of literary journalism learned so much from all the nuances her fine eye picked up.<br \/><br \/>Kari produced a weekly \u2018playlist\u2019 newsletter for readers \u2014 Storyboard and other distinctive pieces paired with her recommendations for music to read by. \u201cStory soundtracks,\u201d she called them. To honor Kari\u2019s own gift of phrase and meaning, here\u2019s a playlist of my favorite Kari soundtracks\u2026<br \/><ul><br \/> \t<li>Kari was devoted to traditional narrative, but she was also devoted to exploring how storytelling is changing. This piece from February 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/stories\/a-tribute-to-audio-storytelling-and-the-memory-of-bedtime-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A tribute to audio storytelling, and to the memory of bedtime stories<\/a>, celebrates how hearing stories is sometimes better than reading them.<\/li><br \/> \t<li>This May 2017 meditation on what distinguishes literary journalism from news writing (and what unites them), <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/stories\/a-celebration-of-literary-journalisms-differences-and-its-singular-strengths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A celebration of narrative journalism\u2019s differences, and its singular strengths<\/a>, articulates Kari\u2019s belief in the power of felt detail and the embrace of emotion in reporting and writing.<\/li><br \/> \t<li>Kari loved Maine, and she was also committed to recognizing great journalism from places other than the big titles in the big cities. This Annotation Tuesday from October 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/stories\/annotation-tuesday-brian-kevin-and-the-belfast-operation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brian Kevin and \u201cThe Belfast Operation\u201d<\/a>, explores the challenges of \u201comni-multitasking\u201d at the regional magazine The Down East and what it\u2019s like reporting in and from Maine\u2019s small towns.<\/li><br \/> \t<li>I love David Bowie and Henry David Thoreau, so I was a sucker for Kari\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/stories\/bowie-and-thoreau-now-theres-a-pair-to-draw-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bowie and Thoreau \u2014 now there\u2019s a pair to draw to<\/a> from June 2016. It is also a wonderful example of Kari\u2019s gifts as a writer and her virtuosity in matching great verbal narratives with great vocal ones.<\/li><br \/> \t<li>Kari\u2019s eye often picked up intriguing patterns in the news and in Storyboard\u2019s coverage of narrative, such as the associations she found between <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/stories\/the-election-of-donald-trump-and-the-death-of-leonard-cohen-an-intersection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The election of Donald Trump and the death of Leonard Cohen<\/a>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/stories\/reporting-on-racism-in-america-one-driven-by-rage-another-confronted-with-rage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reporting on racism in America: One writer confronted with rage, another driven by it<\/a> from October 2017, she connected the dots between the work of Nikole Hannah-Jones and the coverage of Elle Reeve, then with Vice, of the \u201cUnite the Right\u201d rally in Charlottesville.<\/li><br \/> \t<li>In 2017, Kari launched Storyboard\u2019s \u2018One Great Sentence\u2019 series (now known as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/storyboard-category\/one-great-sentence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Great Moment<\/a>\u2019), narrative insights inspired by small moments of excellence in storytelling. Of all the great moments Kari created for Storyboard readers, this one from June 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/stories\/please-no-dancing-on-the-grave-of-beautiful-storytelling-its-not-dead-and-never-will-be\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Please: No dancing on the grave of beautiful storytelling (It\u2019s not dead and never will be)<\/a>, is for me the greatest: \u201cI know that old-fashioned storytelling will never go away. You know, where a writer takes you on a magic carpet ride of beautiful language and compelling characters and lets you leave the world of NOW NOW NOW for a few minutes, at least.\u201d<\/li><br \/><\/ul><br \/>Back in June of 2016, Kari wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/stories\/a-letter-of-introduction-on-loving-literary-journalism-plus-music-maine-and-tattoos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her introductory note as editor of Storyboard<\/a> from her beloved Maine farmhouse. From her porch she could see \u2014 and smell \u2014 what she described as possibly the biggest lilac bush in Waldo County: \u201cIn the space of just two weeks, I&#8217;ve watched the buds go from deep purple to lilac to blush with an edging of brown.
