{"id":2368,"date":"2022-12-22T22:14:59","date_gmt":"2022-12-22T22:14:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/2022\/12\/22\/story-structure-backsetory-context-editing\/"},"modified":"2024-03-07T16:52:56","modified_gmt":"2024-03-07T16:52:56","slug":"story-structure-backsetory-context-editing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/niemanstoryboard.org\/2022\/12\/22\/story-structure-backsetory-context-editing\/","title":{"rendered":"Compression: It&#8217;s not just for socks"},"content":{"rendered":"    \n    <div class=\"  core-block\">\n        <div class=\"block block--core block--core-html mb-5   max-w-screen-full mx-auto\">\n            <span class=\"legacy-dropcap\">A<\/span>ds on radio and news sites here in Seattle are promoting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pottedpotter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cPotted Potter,\u201d<\/a> a romp of a stage play that retells all seven Harry Potter books \u2014 more than 4,000 pages worth \u2014 in 70 minutes. I\u2019ve read every word of every book and seen every movie \u2014 most of them multiple times. I can take issue with J.K. Rowling\u2019s overuse of the -ly adverb, especially when pushing the simple attributive \u201csaid.\u201d But it\u2019s hard to argue with what, by some counts, is the best-selling series of novels of all time. And even my toughest edit couldn\u2019t squeegee 4,000-plus pages into a 70-minute script. What about the needed backstory?<br \/><br \/>I\u2019ll get back to \u201cPotted Potter,\u201d but first a bit of backstory of my own:<br \/><br \/>A habitual weakness of mine, as a young \u2013 and not-so-young \u2013 reporter\/writer was to overdue the context. I worked hard to gather it as I tried to understand how the past informs the present which might foreshadow or forewarn the future. So I figured my readers deserved no less.<br \/><br \/>My editors felt differently. My copy came in long (\u201cYou overwrite!\u201d) and had big glops of story-sludge slowing everything down. That was true whether I was filing a straightforward news piece or a personality profile or an early attempt at narrative. Admonishments to cut things down or speed them up weren\u2019t of much use; I didn\u2019t know what to cut or how to move a story forward without all that foundational drag.<br \/><br \/>The message finally got through when one of my best editors sent an important profile back to me for a rework. She had circled a section of backstory \u2014 probably 12 or 15 paragraphs \u2014 with this note: <em>Condense to eight lines.<\/em><br \/><br \/>Now, as an editor, I keep a keen squint to overloaded backstory. It\u2019s part of what I call \u201creader think:\u201d How much context or explanation does a reader need to understand the story being told? When\/where in a story do they need that information?\u201d How much is too much, thus a reason to stop reading? It\u2019s hard enough to assess that as an editor. As the writer, nearly impossible, which is why all writers needed editors who, ideally, serve as first, smart, critical but supportive readers.<br \/><br \/>I always thought of tightening the backstory as an act of compression. Then I heard my friend, Poynter senior scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/author\/rclark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roy Peter Clark<\/a>, diss the notion of compression and instead preach <em>selection<\/em>. His lesson, in brief (compressed?): You don\u2019t squeeze information out; instead you make choices \u2014 selections \u2014 about what to put in.<br \/><br \/>I wasn\u2019t wrong. Phrases, sentences, paragraphs still need to be squinted at and compressed.<br \/><br \/>But as usual, Clark was more right. Because even my clumsy process involves acts of selection.<br \/><br \/>All this takes us back to \u201cPotted Potter.\u201d I doubt I\u2019ll get to the theater while it\u2019s here. But reading about it reminded me of one of my most fun bits of compressed, selected backstory: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qEP8oGEBsG4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scene from \u201cFrozen 2\u201d when Olaf the Snowdude<\/a> tells the people locked in the enchanted forest of the far north the backstory of what led them there. The YouTube clip is just shy of 2 minutes, but Olaf\u2019s selective retelling of \u201cFrozen 1\u201d starts 45 seconds in, so lasts no more than a minute.<br \/><br \/>To really get the story Olaf is telling, it probably helps to have seen the first movie. That&#8217;s where the screenplay writers needed to consider a bit of watcher-think.
